Van Go Lion bring that strong sense of the 80s and early 90s electro-pop authenticity, with the amplification of the 2000s. Well-crafted Pop is well-crafted music – period; it merges commercial appeal with creative verity. Paige and Loerzel craft music that is catchy, but classically-trained. (Trapperkeeper)

Who is Van Go Lion? How would you describe your music?
Amy Paige + Josh Loerzel! We’re Pop. Electronic. Synthy. Layered.

Let’s start from the beginning – how did you meet Josh?
Hah, we met on Craigslist. He was looking for a singer for his rock band at the time, little did we know it’d end up just being the two of us sitting at his laptop making pop songs.

Initially, did you have a vision of how you wanted Van Go Lion to sound?
No, not at all. ‘Glow’ was the first track we recorded, and it came about pretty organically by working together, combining Josh’s production and my lyrics. After we listened to the finished song was when we knew the music would ultimately be influenced by 80’s and 90’s pop sounds.

What do you do when you’re not making music?
Sit around and pout!

Is singing the only thing that you’ve ever wanted to do, or did you harbour different ambitions when you were younger?
I grew up in choir and always dreamed I was Mariah Carey… singing to her in my living room. But I didn’t think of singing/songwriting as a profession until I moved to Portland three years ago and fell into the music scene. When I was little, I wanted to be a zoo keeper until I realized « hugging tigers » wasn’t really the job description.

Amy, can you remember what was the first type of music you were exposed to?
My mom absolutely LOVES R&B, so I was exposed to singers like Luther Vandross, Whitney, Stevie Wonder and Oleta Adams before anything else. REAL SANGIN’!

Can you remember the first album you really fell in love with?
Mariah Carey ‘Musicbox’ — Billy Joel ‘The Stranger’ — Alanis Morissette ‘Jagged Little Pill’

What was your very first gig?
Josh and I played at Ash Street Saloon in Portland, OR a couple years back. A lot of our friends and family came out. It was awesome.

What have you been currently listening to lately that you are loving?
Bon Iver and Empire of the Sun. And ’90’s house… Danny Tenaglia.

Future plans for Van Go Lion?
We’re finishing up a bunch of brand new tracks — some are very light and housey, others are darker ballads — we are very excited to release them in 2012, with our friends at Aztec Records!

Thanks to Amy. Thanks to Van Go Lion and AZTEC Records
