We Are Knights are a new band hailing from France. They are a three-piece band comprising of Jean-Marc Battalier, Guilhem Hatt and Gaelle Malandrone.
With every track they produce this band impress me whether it’s a stripped down slow track with a compelling beat or a pulsating electronic track with punching sounds. The band have recently been part of the album Kituné Parisien II with their track Tears featuring at track number nine on the reputable Kitsuné compilation.
They accepted to answer some of our questions
How are you today and where are you answering our questions from? Did you have your own initial vision for what you wanted We are Knights to be?
We all three returned from holiday and we are now back in Paris with lots of new beautiful projects. Working on new tracks and preparing our future gigs.
To start with, how did the three of you get to know each other and put a band together?
Guilhem and I (Jean-Marc) worked together on some other projects and we collaborated on a title for a clothing brand in June 2011. This really was a turning point : We were spontaneously in phase in our work in compositions and arrangements. We found a perfect relationship, a real osmosis in our work. Immediately we wanted to form a band. A few months later we offered to Gaëlle to join us. She immediately joined the project with us on stage, and then we were launched.
What’s your inspiration? What bands have inspired you?
There are many bands and singers involved in our daily life, Dylan or Sonic Youth. Belle & Sebastian has also been fundamental in our
approach to some musical poetry, Joy Division too. The songwriting has always had a prominent place in the records that we listen to, such as Grandaddy, Sparklehorse… It is difficult to identify some specific references. Cinema and literature are, for example, also part of a process of our musical production. Over time, no one really knows what elements were digested …
What are you planning following the first EP? How are you getting on with writing more material?
Willl you have a new EP ready anytime soon?
We have our first EP out on digital :
We will release a new EP, and one title on an indie label in Brooklyn.
We also implement Remix for other bands and we take great pleasure in this exercise. We look forward to these outings !
If You were not making music, what do you think you’d be doing?
Jean-Marc : A zombie hunter
Guilhem : it never was an option
Gaelle : Actress. I also try to get a role.
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
Jean-Marc: carry stuff too heavy for me
Guilhem : Student
Gaelle : Dog grooming
What is the first song you put on when you wake up?
Jean-Marc : David Lynch – Stone’s Gone Up or Yuksek – On a train
Guilhem : Otis Redding- Change gonna come
Gaelle : Fritz Kalkbrenner- Facing the Sun
One French band you should listen to (that Is not your band)?
Jean-Marc : The Bewitched Hands
Guilhem : Valoy Brown and the pi’s
Gaelle : The Do
