Sam Sparro is an Australian singer-songwriter, music producer, and former child actor.
His stage name was derived from a family nickname, which in turn was inspired by the Dagenham radio mascot Sammy Sparrow.
Sam Sparro comes from a family immersed in music. His great-grandfather was a professor of music, his grandfather was a trumpet player who performed with Frank Sinatra amongst others and his father, Chris Falson, was an accomplished gospel singer.
He scored a record deal with Island Records and in 2008 he hit the mark with his career changing single ‘Black & Gold’ – which was labelled “unquestionably, the single of the year!” (BBC).
His live performances found him touring with the likes of Adele and Robyn, eventually headlining his own tour and playing festivals around the world including Glastonbury and Coachella. The Guardian declared Sam “a superb singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and programmer” and “has what it takes to become a household name”.
From 2010 to 2012 years Sam has been working on his anticipated sophomore album RETURN TO PARADISE.
Sam accepted to answer some of our questions :
Hello Sam, how do you feel one month before the release of your new album?
I feel really excited. I love this album and I can’t wait for people to have it in their hands and on their ipods.
Where are you answering our interview questions from?
I’m in LA getting ready to fly to London.
In early June you are to visit us in Paris for a concert. What is your first french memory?
The first time I came to France I was 19. I had a great time and I always do when I’m there. It’s one of my favourite places to visit.
Moreover, when you hear ‘France’ what comes first to your mind?
What happened in Sam Sparro’s life after the promotion of your previous album has ended?
I took some time off to think about what I wanted to do next and I had a lot of changes in my personal life.
I travelled a lot and wrote and recorded about 60 songs as well as working with other artists. I also adopted two dogs and have my own home here in LA where I live with them.
What was your musical inspiration to make this new album?
Disco, Soul and Funk, New York City, and heartbreak
Is there any track of the album that stands out? Any track that you prefer?
My favourites on the album are Yellow Orange Rays, Let The Love In, We Could Fly and Shades of Grey
Besides, how many tracks have you recorded for this opus?
Way too many- around 60. I think some of them will go on the next album.
On your new album, there is one track with Roisin Murphy, How did this collaboration happen? And how come you wanted to work with her? Were you a Moloko fan?
Although I’m a big fan and would love to work with her – this is just a rumor – there is no such track unfortunately – though we are friendly and have gone to each others shows and hung out at fashion shows together.
What is your view on the current music industry model? Do you think it makes promotion any easier or more difficult than the old business industry model with physical formats in stores?
I think there are less great albums being made because it is a singles market but things happen a lot faster now which can also make them more disposable. I don’t think we are in the best period of the music industry.
Where do you see yourself in a few years from now? Anything coming up you’d like to throw out there that’s coming up?
A few years from now I will be rigorously working on new music and touring the world. I love what I do and I never want to stop.
What are you currently listening to? Any suggestion to share?
I recommend Little Dragon, Damon Albarn, Tiger and Woods.
Your last word for our TEEZ’FM listeners?
Thank You for listening! Hope you love RETURN TO PARADISE as much as I do.
