Gossling is the project of singer/songwriter Helen Croome. Gossling’s debut EP ‘If You Can’t Whistle’ garnered plenty of attention, with the track “Days Are Over” becoming part of Triple J’s staple play list, and “He Knows My Love” being used in the Triple J ‘Unearthed’ promos. Gossling’s tracks were discovered by Triple J after she drew attention as an Unearthed artist.

Gossling’s latest offering, ‘Until Then’ is following on from the success of ‘If You Can’t Whistle’, delighting fans of her debut EP and winning new ones along the way. Catchy first single, toe-tapper “I Was Young” has again picked up strong Triple J and community radio support. The video of the same name secured iTunes Music Video of the Week on Release.

How did the band start out?
I started song writing when I left high school and moved to the city to go to university. I was studying Psychology but decided to leave the course and study a Bachelor of Music instead. It was while studying music that I met some mates who now join me every now and then to play shows as Gossling.

How would you describe your music for those who haven’t heard of you yet?
It could be classed as singer/songwriter, folk/pop. Musically my sound is soft and sweet as well as dark and melodic.

How does the band write, musically and lyrically?
More often than not I will start writing a chord progression first and then a melody will follow. The lyrics are usually the last thing to get written. I find the melody helps suggest what the story line and lyrics will be about.

What made you guys think a career in music was for you?
It doesn’t sound very exciting or magical but music have been something I’ve fallen into. I guess it has slowly developed from a hobby into my career over the last few years.

Was the writing process as fraught, or did you have more time dedicated to
song writing?

I’m not the sort of songwriter that has songs pouring out at a rapid speed. I have to wait for the moment to come to me when song writing. I can try and dedicate time to song writing, but more often than not melodies will come to me when I’m not in my studio or when I’m driving the car.

‘I was young’ is the first single to be released from ‘Until then’ – why did
you choose that track?

The track is a lot more up-beat then the rest of the songs on the EP. I didn’t think it would be the single until we got to the end of making the EP and I thought it would be a great track to introduce myself with for a new audience.

Which musicians do you admire?
Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, Camille, Sia, Paul McCartney

To conclude with,
What have you got on your iPod at the mo?
I have the new Noah and The Whale album. And I’ve always got a bit of Stevie Wonder and Jackson 5 to get me in a good mood.

What can we expect from Gossling in the future?
A new release by the end of 2011 and hopefully a few shows in the UK and Europe in mid-2012.

Can you tell me some words in French? 🙂

Ou est la bibliotheque?

Any closing words for TEEZ’FM listeners?
I hope you like my EP ‘Until Then’!
